Admission & Application Essays Do you notice how each of these opening lines raises more questions than it answers? They give you enough information to get a sense of what the essay will be about, but not enough to really understand what is going on. This is a great strategy because it grabs your reader’s attention and compels them to continue in order to find out what is going on and fill in the gaps in their understanding. Don’t start reinventing yourself with the essay. Unfortunately, a huge percentage of essays fall into this category. One student I know loved maps and also had somehow memorized the flag of every country in the world. It didn’t occur to him that this was particularly unique until he talked with a teacher who pointed it out to him. There are two required short-answer questions, which vary depending on the program to which you are applying . You might not have enough space to tell your entire life story, but if you focus on a couple of examples, it can make your essay come to life. Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. If you are funny, write a funny essay; if you are serious, write a serious essay. These are the parts that make your essay come alive. The first paragraph is mostly summary â€" it tells the reader facts about who you are, things you’ve done, tendencies you have, etc. (e.g. I never saw myself as a cat person). Summaries can be useful for bridging the gap between in-scene moments, or reflecting back on an experience and what it meant to you. However, an essay consisting entirely of summary is going to be dry and boring to read. Examples and little stories make an essay come to life and add your individual character to the words. Remember to think about how the topic applies to you. The point is to stand out with a unique and personal essay. When you visit the Common Application or the Coalition Application website to fill out and submit your application to Tufts, you'll notice that the application includes Tufts-specific questions.
